Dusk has almost set, the last light creeps away
All the tall wooden shapes begin to blend together in the dark
Bough and twig, gnarl and branch, lunar silhouettes
The forest rooted in rolling mountain slopes
Softening the crags and cracks beneath a black leafy sea
What endless variety of shapes mustered from soil's depths
Tall and straight, bent and barren, twisted and leaning
Young and old, lithe and brittle, hardy and rotting
All awaiting the wormy fungal stomach of patiently hungry earth
Ever exerting its fertility and ruthlessness
Yet my life is but a spark floating quickly to black
Amidst the sombering ancientness of these mystical living towers
Torn by wind, cracked by thunder, gnawed by ice, yet stoically they stand
My eyes feel the roughness of the bark and the slime of the moss
In this frozen silence I feel my spirit stirred
By a call otherwise unheard
Faintly I feel in the soil the lingering death of countless generations
Man and beast alike, a river of life flowing through time
Ancestors long lost call to my blood
In this beautiful chaos I sense an ancient hatred
The sharp edge of a perfecting blade whittling all life
Condemning weakness, lesser beings damned by ill or by fang
The runt's rotten face giving way to new shoots consumed by the strong
I feel this natural bigotry in every inch of my flesh
As I raise my hand before my face, pondering the violent history of its shape and colour
Brooding in flesh, bark and bone, an ancient tale of struggle and brutality
Of survival barely scraped from cosmic indifference, over and over
Death and life blend into one in this state of endless war
And in the dark I feel so very old and cold
